REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) Compliance is product compliance, and is a regulation in the European Union that requires manufacturers to make sure their products are safe and to provide detailed information on the substances they contain. It was created to protect human health and the environment against the harmful effects of chemical substances.
REACH Regulation
(EC) Regulation No. 1907/2006, known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) came into effect on June 1, 2007. It sets out procedures for assessing and managing risks associated with chemicals to hold manufacturers to a high standard regarding chemicals in their products. It applies to all individual chemical substances 30,000 of them to be exact; whether on their own, in mixtures, or incorporated into articles.
Under REACH, the responsibility for demonstrating safety lies with companies. They must identify and manage risks posed by chemical substances that are used in their products. Any chemical manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities of one metric tonne or more must be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Manufacturers and importers are required to provide detailed information about the chemical substance and its intended uses, and this information must be communicated throughout the supply chain, including downstream users, distributors, suppliers, and end-users.
ECHA reviews these registrations to evaluate potential hazards and risks to human health and the environment, and determines whether those risks can be effectively managed.
If risks cannot be adequately controlled, ECHA may enforce a ban or impose restrictions on use, along with recommendations for safer alternatives.
