ANSI ISEA 138 Impact Standards

The Importance of Impact Protection

A study by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) has shown that finger injuries account for a third of all injuries and about 20 percent of lost-time injuries. When including hand and wrist injuries, the amount of lost-time injuries combined by the three rise to 41 percent! Impact-related injuries can range from bruising, finger pinching, and bone breakage and fractures.

That’s where the ANSI/ISEA 138-2019 standard comes in, setting the benchmark for impact-resistant gloves across industries like construction, oil & gas, automotive, mining, and manufacturing.

Before 2019, glove manufacturers had no unified framework for measuring impact protection. The ANSI/ISEA 105 standard covered cut, abrasion, and puncture resistance, but left impact performance undefined. This led to inconsistent claims and confusion for safety managers trying to choose the right gloves.

The ANSI/ISEA 138 standard changed that. Developed by the working group of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), it defines three performance levels for gloves based on how much force is transmitted through the back of the hand during testing. Level 3 offers the highest protection.
