The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) is a globally established and reputable test method developer with a wide range of technical standards and tests. For testing biodegradability in anaerobic environments (modern landfills), the two most accepted and well-established standards are ASTM D5526 (stringent, long-term test) and ASTM D5511 (short-term test). The performance of biodegradable products or materials is conducted in laboratories using standardized testing, which simulates landfill conditions.
ASTM D5526 – Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under Accelerated Landfill Conditions
The ASTM D5526 test is a long-term test that closely simulates a landfill environment. Because these tests run longer and are more stringent, they provide more realistic, reliable results of what to expect in real-life situations (compared to ASTM D5511). Tests can run for as long as it takes to determine the material breakdown time.

ASTM D5511 – Standard Test Method for Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials Under High-Solids Anaerobic-Digestion Conditions
The ASTM D5511 test is a short-term test to determine the biodegradability of materials in a high solid anaerobic environment. Material under the ASTM D5511 is tested in ideal laboratory conditions and assumes long-term expected biodegradability timing based on shorter testing measures (typically 30 days for testing).
