EN 511 Protection From Cold

The standard evaluates performance in cold and extreme conditions. Protection against cold is shown by a pictogram that is followed by three performance levels, each pertaining to specific qualities.

The pictogram is accompanied by three numbers representing:
1. Resistance to convective cold (Performance levels 0-4)
2. Resistance to contact cold (Performance level 0-4)
3. Permeability by water (Performance level 0 or 1)
0 = water penetration after 30 minutes
1 = no water penetration after 30 minutes.

The higher performance level the better insulating capacity.

All products when tested to EN388, must achieve at least level 2 for abrasion and tear. If less than level 2, then both the convective cold and contact cold must be reported as a maximum of level 1.
